sh.se
ProjektledareStåhlberg, Per - LektorForskningsfinansiärerÖstersjöstiftelsenThe conflict between Ukraine and Russia has once again reminded the world that wars are not only fought with guns and physical violence, but also with information technologies. In Western mass media, attention has foremost concentrated on Russian propaganda, directed both towards Russian-speaking populations and international publics. With the rise and establishment of social networking media in conjunction with the spread of personal and mobile media technologies such as laptops, mobile phones and tablet computers, propaganda and information management take on new forms, and thus also involve a new set of agents. This project focusses on Ukraine as an arena for information management. This project aims at analysing the new types of actors engaged in information war, and how these impact on the practice and expressive character of information warfare. Toronto jazz singer-songwriter Ori Dagan’s acclaimed multi-media project “Nathaniel: A Tribute to Nat King Cole” was released as both an audio recording and a collection of music videos – the first “visual album” in the jazz genre. Since launching the project in Toronto in late 2017, Dagan has toured it around the world, including an official showcase in Austin Texas at SXSW 2018, headlining the TanJazz festival in Tangier, Morocco and performing at the inaugural Public Diplomacy [JB emphasis] Week in Seoul, Korea.
Musically the project is a unique homage to the jazz giant and pop star, balancing refreshing covers (“Nature Boy”, “Unforgettable”) with obscure gems (“Lillette”, “El Bodeguero”) and 5 original songs inspired by Cole’s life, music and legacy. The recording and music videos feature exceptional rhythm section Mark Kieswetter on piano, Ross MacIntyre on bass and Nathan Hiltz on guitar, ..
University of Hawaii law student already a committed public servant
Andres Gonzalez, abaforlawstudents.com, March 08, 2019
Excerpt:
Brandon Marc Higa wears multiple hats in his community. In addition to attending the University of Hawaii at Mānoa William S. Richardson School of Law, Higa works full-time as director for Resource Development, is a model and actor, and plays the clarinet in the Royal Hawaiian Band—and in his free time, he is an avid swimmer.
Whether in his role as director, law student, or pursuing his love of the arts, Higa’s strong community involvement, both personally and professionally, has proven itself to advance the lives of others.
Higa decided to enroll in law school as he wanted to strengthen his advocacy skills and take advantage of this new knowledge to further his commitment to public service. Soon after finishing his 1L year, he was appointed by Hawaii’s governor, David Y. Ige, to serve a two-year term on the University of Hawaii Board of Regents. In his role as Student Regent, Higa advocated for the university’s over 50,0..

Over the winter break, Johns Hopkins SAIS students from various concentrations embarked on a week-long trip to Japan to learn about the role public diplomacy [JB emphasis] plays in the U.S.-Japan relationship.
The trip, funded by Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and jointly coordinated by the school’s Edwin O. Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies, provided students with the opportunity to speak to academics from Japan’s leading institutions, including Tokyo University and GRIPS, and officials from the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tokyo Metropolitan Government, and Japanese Parliament.
This year, Kakehashi trip participants also made a short detour to Okinawa where they visited Okinawa’s Peace Memorial to learn about the lasting effects of war on the island, and participated in a home-stay program through which they formed lasting bonds and learned about the local culture.
In the spring, the Kakehashi participants will c..

On 7 February 2019, you joined more than 150 diplomats, journalists, NGOs, academics, technologists and entrepreneurs came at the Dutch Embassy in Brussels where you basically organised your own event: Digital Diplomacy Camp 2019! Within the broad theme of the event (the impact of digitalization on diplomacy) you came up with your own sessions and created the entire programme of the day, on the day itself.
We want to once again share with you what you discussed with each other at #DiploCamp by sharing the notes you made. We went through them and cleaned them up (only a little bit – original versions still on the etherpads) and arranged them under general headings for readability. So please have a look at what you produced, re-read the main take-aways, and check out your (P..

Memorable quotation from the article:Enter the surveillance state, and welcome to the post-truth age.
In the few decades since the end of the Cold War, the Globalization Age has heralded a new era of volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity. The neo-liberal model of international relations, in place since the middle of the last century and anchored by the Breton Woods institutions, is crumbling, yet new forms of global governance have yet to be established. Power is shifting inexorably from the North Atlantic to the Asia Pacific and from states to a host of new players – corporate, non-governmental, supra- and sub-national. In the emerging heteropolar world order, quite unlike the multi- or bi- polar days of yore, today the sources and vectors of power and influence are defined more by difference than by similarity, and a populist surge has been engendered in reactionary response. Risks are mul..

Switzerland’s Foreign Policy Should Be a Model for America
Brandon J. Weichert, amgreatness.com

Switzerland is not an isolationist country, however. Like the United States throughout most of its history, the Swiss simply prefer to rely on diplomacy and trade to handle the bulk of their interactions with most of the world. Switzerland has a robust international trading profile and is even an observing member in the flagging European Union. That said, it is not a full member of the EU. Such a membership would have threatened the Swiss freedom of action and they wisely avoided such a step. The Swiss interact with the surrounding world only when and how it benefits them.
Switzerland is also internationally respected. Today, America’s acceptance of an ever-increasing array of never-ending foreign entanglements has drained it of vital resources (and people) that could be put to better use making our Union more perfect. Despite spending more than $700 billion on our national defense, America’s military leaders unanimousl..
