Comment: Gantz is Telling Anglo Olim We’re not Israeli Enough
Lahav Harkov, Jerusalem Post, February 20, 2019
It could easily be understood that Gantz is delegitimizing English-speaking immigrants as phonies who can’t be leaders of Israel.
Image from article: Benny Gantz speaks at the annual Munich Security Conference in Munich, Germany February 17, 2019
“In a month and a half, we will all choose between a ruler who has English from Boston, heavy makeup, and luxury suits – and an Israeli leadership which is real, caring, authentic and not phony,” Israel Resilience Party leader Benny Gantz said in a speech Tuesday night.
Leave aside the fact that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s English is from spending most of his childhood in the suburbs of Philadelphia, and not Boston.
What are all the other Israelis from Boston, Philadelphia, New York, London, Johannesburg or Melbourne supposed to think?
Regardless of what Gantz intended, that remark, as well as him saying that Netanyahu was busy in America “to improve your English and practice it at luxuri..
Troubling Trends in Ambassadorial Appointments: 1980 to the Present

Then-Secretary of State Rex Tillerson meets with U.S. ambassadors and chargé d'affaires for South America, February 2018 (Source: Flickr/State Department)Since the 1950s, presidents have consistently allocated roughly 30 percent of ambassadorial appointments to individuals who are not career diplomats. This practice, atypical among advanced democracies and a recurrent source of controversy, is currently on track to expand: Over the first two years of the Trump administration, more than 40 percent of appointments to bilateral ambassadorships went to presidential supporters who are not foreign service officers. For example, Robert Wood Johnson IV—the ambassador to the United Kingdom—co-owns the New York Jets. Carla Sands (Denmark) is a chiropractor and former actress. David Friedman (Israel) is a ba..

Image from article, with caption: Portugal’s Antonio Felix da Costa won the opening race of the Formula E season in Saudi Arabia. (SPA)
With the recent transformations in the international political scene, traditional ways of achieving foreign policy aims have also transformed. Earlier approaches such as foreign aid and diplomacy were the most common ways of achieving foreign policy goals. Now, “national integrity” is respected by all states in the international order and public diplomacy is the most common way to achieve goals.
Public diplomacy [JB emphasis] has become a significant instrument of foreign policy and is used by states to influence public opinion and the ruling class. In essence, public diplomacy is the promotion of ideas and national interests by informing and educating people around the world through cultural activities, exchange programs and social media.
Saudi Arabia’s priorities are increasingly focused on enhancing its public image by becoming more transparent in..

Nauert Withdraws, UN Ambassador Post Available Again, Hurry!
diplopundit.net, Posted: 12:30 am EST
We’re late on this but apparently, Heather Nauert who was publicly announced as nominee to be the next U.N. Ambassador has withdrawn herself from consideration citing “the past two months” as “grueling” for her family. Her statement released with the State Department announcement on February 16 says that “it is in the best interest” of her family to withdraw.Bloomberg News says “Trump’s pick for UN ambassador had employed a nanny who was in US legally but didn’t have a US work permit.”Wait. When was this nanny hired? The spokesperson job does not require senate confirmation but like almost all jobs at the State Department, it requires a security clearance. So are they saying that the nanny issue, if that was the issue, did not come up during her initial vetting when she first came to State two years ago?MSM is also reporting that Ms. Nauert is not expected to return to her State Department jobs. Until her announced nomination, she was the departmen..

The Legacy of Walter Roberts
pdaa.publicdiplomacy.org
By Thomas MillerIf the measure of a man is the legacy he leaves behind, few people can match Dr. Walter Roberts. Walter Roberts helped found the Voice of America, played a key role in establishing the Salzburg Seminar, launched the Fulbright program in Yugoslavia, and helped found the precursor to the Institute for Public Diplomacy [JB emphasis] and Global Communications at George Washington University. Thanks largely to the generous donations of Walter Roberts, his family, and his very wide circle of friends, a Walter Roberts Endowment continues to support public diplomacy activities at the university.
Walter Roberts (VOA)Fleeing his native Austria in 1938, Walter Roberts emigrated to the U.S. He was later recruited as one of the first employees of the Office of the Coordinator of Information, which later became the Voice of America. “I was there at the creation,” Walter Roberts once said. In addition to working at the Voice of America for eight years, Dr. Rob..
