Foreign Policy & Diplomacy The securitization of U.S. diplomatic missions around the world remains a significant, even growing, challenge. Indeed, it is part of a larger phenomenon, one that preceded the Trump administration: the undermining of State Department influence and the militarization of U.S. diplomacy in the post-Cold War era, poignantly documented in the journalist Ronan Farrow’s recent book, War on Peace: The End of Diplomacy and the Decline of American Influence. These are realities that will outlast the Trump administration, and thus need to remain part of the discussion if America and Americans truly believe that diplomacy and public diplomacy [JB emphasis] should remain a central part of the national security toolkit. After 9/11, the securitization of U.S. diplomatic missions went far beyond moving embassies outside city centers and reinforcing them aga..

Editor's note: Dr. Yuan Sha is an assistant research fellow at the Department for American Studies at the China Institute of International Studies. The article reflects the author's opinion, and not necessarily the views of CGTN.The "Chinese Influence & American Interests: Promoting "Constructive Vigilance" report jointly released by the Hoover Institution and Asia Society is part of a broader narrative of China as "sharp power," which helped usher in a new wave of the“China threat.”A new wave of the 'China threat'The recurring theme of the“China threat" is rearing its ugly head again. What differentiates this new wave from the previous ones is that it focuses more on the so-called "sharp power."
Sharp power, a term coined by the U.S. National Endowment for Democracy, has gained popularity in U.S. politics and academics. Different from "hard power" which coerces by military or economic strength and" soft power" which influences by appeal and ..

Digital technologies are not simply influencing the existing practice of public diplomacy [JB emphasis] —the field itself has been fundamentally reshaped.Oxford researcher Ilan Manor has authored a new book, The Digitzation of Public Diplomacy, out now as part of the Palgrave Macmillan Series in Global Public Diplomacy co-edited by CPD Faculty Fellows Kathy Fitzpatrick and Philip Seib.Manor's book uses case studies to frame digitalization as a long-term process in which the values, norms, goal and aims of the field are re-thought within the context of a transformed digital society, comprising institutions, practitioners and audiences."When examining how digital technologies influence the practice of public diplomacy, scholars often explore how technology facilitates or disrupts diplomatic activities," writes Manor. "This book offers a different departure point by arguing that one cannot understand the influence of d..

The United States will increase its presence in Central Europe through new cultural, economic and security initiatives, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said during a press conference with Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto on Monday.
"I’m announcing new initiatives that will strengthen the US presence in Central Europe," Pompeo said. "We are increasing the support for people-to-people ties, events and exchanges [JB emphasis]. … We are also increasing support to help Hungary in its fight against corruption, strengthening law enforcement cooperation and providing mentorships training and exchanges … in all four Visegrad countries."
Pompeo said the United States’ absence in the region was "unacceptable" and claimed that the country’s rivals, particularly Russia and China, have stepped in to fill the vacuum.
"Today, we are reconfirming our determination for positive influence in the..

Little noticed in the media circus surrounding the mere introduction of a non-binding Congressional resolution on the Green New Deal was the deletion of much-criticized and plainly unachievable mandates contained in previous GND versions. ...
In fact, the more extreme provisions in the GND have served largely to provide Trump and other Republican anti-climate action forces with irresistible political fodder. Republicans hope to scare the American people into opposing sensible climate actions by invoking GND extremism ...

Abstract
Soft power debate has not analytically moved beyond the questions of whether soft power matters and of whether soft power can work independent of hard power since Nye’s initial formulation. Furthermore, the question of how a state selects the source(s) of its soft power remains silent in the literature. This neglect leads to the underspecification of the nature and content of a given state’s soft power policy. In this article, we fill in these gaps by recasting the conventional understanding of soft power conceptually and analytically. Conceptually, we make the case that soft power should be u..

MIAMI. Haiti's man in Washington, an ambassador with seven years under his belt defending his country's image, has been recalled.
At a time when Haiti is facing critical issues that need representation before the Trump administration, Paul Altidor received a letter on Tuesday informing him that his services will no longer be needed. The recall was effective immediately.
"We accomplished a lot here at the embassy," Altidor said.
He took Haiti's diplomatic mission on Embassy Row in Washington from a place where Haitians only went to get passports and resolve document issues to a cultural hot spot where visitors could bask in Haitian culture from art to cooking to artistry.
Altidor, 45, had submitted his resignation to President Jovenel Moise a year ago. But the president had asked him to stay on, and in recent days had found himself fielding calls from concerned U.S...
