Clippers’ Marcin Gortat heavily vested in ‘Polish heritage day,’ and in Poland’s youth programs

For someone who’d just played his best game of the season, center Marcin Gortat was rather subdued at his locker after the Clippers’ victory Friday in Phoenix.
“Yeah, it feels good,” he said, “but I wish to have the same game on Sunday.”
Barring a Clippers playoff berth this season, no game will mean more to Gortat than Sunday’s celebration of “Polish heritage day” during the Staples Center matinee against Orlando. The 34-year-old Gortat, the fourth NBA player produced by Poland and the only one actively in the league, is a role player for the Clippers but a celebrity in his home country, where he employs nearly a dozen through his MG13 Foundation and helps fund and oversee four schools that develop young athletes.
“It’s a huge responsibility,” he said. “I’m like an ambassador of my country showing t..

The USC Annenberg Center on Communication Leadership and Policy held a discussion on politics, war and the use of social media. Peter Singer and Emerson Brooking, co-authors of “LikeWar: The Weaponization of Social Media,” discussed what they learned from five years researching their book in which they discussed the tool sets and strategies of social media influencing, and how those same tactics are similarly employed by political campaigns, celebrities and nefarious actors. They also talked about what more the U.S. government should do to both modernize its own cybersecurity and educate American companies and private citizens for better online health and security.

China’s unconventional war is inflicting greater damage on India

China is emphasising public diplomacy [JB emphasis] to help soften Indian public opinion and mute Indian concerns over an increasingly asymmetrical trade relationship. Foreign Minister Wang Yi said in New Delhi the new people-to-people mechanism will “help consolidate the public-opinion foundation” for bilateral ties. China’s public diplomacy aims to underpin its “win-win” policy toward India — engagement with containment.
New Delhi, however inadvertently, is lending a helping hand to Beijing’s strategy of engagement as a façade for containment. India has done little more than implore China to rein in its spiralling trade surplus. The lopsided trade relationship makes India essentially a colonial-style raw-material appendage of the state-led Chinese economy, which increasingly dumps manufactured go..

Hacking the 2018 Midterm Election: A Crash Course
By Benjamin Dynkin and Barry Dynkin, law.com/newyorklawjournal; see also (1)
Photo: Christian Schwier/FotoliaIn a recent poll of cybersecurity experts, when asked if “state election systems [are] sufficiently protected against cyberthreats,” 95 percent responded no. Given the seriousness of the threat, and its ability to impact the future of the United States it is worth examining what other options there are in the United States’ playbook for dealing with election interference and hacking, specifically, the scope of responses permitted under international law to deter and respond to these types of attacks. ...The question of whether or not an electoral interference campaign that does not directly impact vote totals or the functionality of electoral systems can reach the necessary threshold of coercivity is both complicated and unsettled. Many theories of how such a campaign could potentially violate international law have been proposed, from the notion that the erosion of democratic l..

Event Description:
In today’s global sports world, the intersection of sport and diplomacy has become an everyday phenomenon. The power of sport is wide and diverse but is greatest when it unifies citizens across cultures and communities to better understand each other; a remarkably similar outcome to that which Diplomacy endeavors to achieve. Different approaches to global sports leadership and utilization of sport as an element of soft power/public diplomacy [JB emphasis] efforts are deployed around the world by states and non-state actors like leagues, teams, companies, and individuals. But just what, exactly, does the intersection of sport and diplomacy look like? What is sport diplomacy? Who, in today’s Internet-connected, social media-influenced world, serves as de facto ambassador..

After a couple of tumultuous years, President Donald Trump seems to have reached the conclusion that he has had quite enough of generals. Now, as a retired admiral, I have certainly been annoyed over the years by a number of generals. Yet by and large, I’ve found them quite effective as leaders, organizers, planners and strategists–the type one would expect from those wh..
