Economic Officers for the Future

by Charles P. Ries, rand.org Ries image from article (in Ries bio below) International economics is once again at the forefront of foreign policy. Accounts of serious trade disputes, a U.S. effort to derail a new gas pipeline from Russia to Europe, stiff new economic sanctions on Iran and concern about imports of automobiles fill the front pages of American dailies. It sometimes feels like the 1980s all over again. But this time, the much higher public salience of foreign policy issues amid sharp polarization, accelerating climate change, the growing role of China in the international order and radical changes in communications technology (including social media) put the old issues in a new perspective and challenge old ways of doing business. It is a good time, therefore, to consider how the Foreign Service should recruit, train and nurture a strong cadre of economic officers for the decades ahead. Economic Officer vs. International Economist The key distinction between a Foreign Serv..

Turkey’s Shift from Soft Power | USC Center on Public Diplomacy

uscpublicdiplomacy.org uncaptioned image from entry Recently, the Turkish government has garnered global attention for its response to the death of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. But will this effort help restore Turkey's soft power image?CPD Contributing Scholar Senem Çevik writes that instead, Turkey has steered its strategy from one that leverages its soft power to one that relies increasingly on hard power tools such as its defense industry. The difficulty of repairing a damaged reputation reinforces one key principle of public diplomacy [JB emphasis] —that public diplomacy alone cannot be sufficient damage control if unhelpful policies remain in place. "To be sure, despite commendable public diplomacy efforts, Turkey is largely a victim of its own policies in both the domestic and international arenas. Turkey’s domestic policies and confrontational foreign policy rhetoric damage Turkey’s image in the short term, and in the long term help to gradually build an undesirable reputat..

The Ugly Chinese

By: John Nery, Philippine Daily Inquirer, January 08, 2019 image from In 1958, William Lederer and Eugene Burdick wrote a thinly disguised novel about their country’s outrageous conduct — a dangerous mix of determined ignorance and blithe arrogance — in Southeast Asia. The book carried a title that became a catchphrase and then a damning definition. “The Ugly American,” which sold millions of copies, became shorthand for the brash, America-is-best, why-don’t-the-locals-speak-English kind of American tourist. The writing is still highly legible today. As Michael Meyer noted in the New York Times in 2009, “the phrase is shorthand for our compatriots who wear tube tops to the Vatican or shout for Big Macs in Beijing… drunken backpackers or seniors sporting black socks.” The most recent example of ugly-American behavior on unconscious display may have been that of Miss USA Sarah Rose Summers at the Miss Universe competition last month, when she expressed her concern or regret or sympathy —..

How Sisi’s Plans for a PR Campaign Turned into an International Scandal

İsmail Numan Telci, The New Turkey Egyptian media outlet Mada Masr argued that due to the fear of domestic reactions, the Egyptian government ordered media channels in the country not to cover any news related to the 60 Minutes interview on any TV channel, newspaper, or website. Sisi image from article Excerpt: Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, who is behind the 2013 military coup, made headlines in the international media with a new scandal, which was initially planned to be a public diplomacy [JB emphasis] campaign.
